The design function should satisfy the needs of the customer while also surprising them with usefulness they did not know they needed.

The design form should elicit an emotional response that supports the function without inhibiting it in any way.

A designer's intellect is most often evident in the

design itself. It is the ability of the designer to

actualize the concept. The designer's intellect

allows them to incorporate the essential and lose

the extraneous without losing meaning. It is

where the artistry of the designer becomes

apparent.

The "i" here symbolizes the importance of

the intellect in completing the design, while

the stem of the "i" symbolizes the artistry

that comes from the intellect.

Inspiration can come from anywhere. Humans, nature,

architecture, emotions, common items, etc. often times

will inspire designers. The effectiveness of a design can

often depend on the understanding that commonality

brings. Often times simply manipulating the common

into the extraordinary can cheer the mind and excite

the senses.

The "i" here represents the pursuit of the eureka.

The arm grasping for the lightbulb symbolizes the

process of searching for the inspirational moment

that will guide the rest of the design.

There is nothing new under the sun. A designer's goal is

often one of originality, however careful examination of

design will often reveal multiple sources that shape the

design, be it intentional or not. These influences includes

such things as the designer's taste, and style. They can

also include past and present trends, technology,

environment, etc.

Terms such as Classical and Modern seek to describe

influential aestetic trends. Design influences can be both

constructive or destructive but the designer must always

seek to understand and master these influences, otherwise

they may limit and disrupt the process.

The "i" here represents the blend of Classical and

Modern influences represented by the Classical

Greek pillar and the Modern paint splatter.

Insight is understanding. Design insight is the ability to get

outside the box, tear the box apart, and then reshape the

box into the perfect shape. Insight is understanging how a

design will communicate with it's audience. Insight can see

from multiple angles and with fresh eyes.

Insight is more than knowledge. Knowledge presents a single

solution to a specific problem. Knowledge is the "cookie-cutter"

mentality. Insight is breaking down the cookie ingredients to

understand how the improve the cookie. It is greater than

knowledge, it is the mastery of knowledge.

Imagination is the creative force behind all designs. A good

designer must have a unique world within his mind where ideas

can marinate. Imagination keeps ideas fresh and presents the

designer with a limitless pool of options. Imagination is the key

component of the brainstorming process.

The "i" in imagination signifies both a thought bubble as well as

a cloud. Imagination can live soley within our minds, manifesting

itself in dreams and stories. Imagination also reminds us of our

childhood when we could see many different things in the shapes

of the clouds. The gray lining of the cloud can also symbolize

brainstorming with ideas churning within ready to break out

in a thunderstorm at any moment.
